Internship Description: Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a GIS/Remote Sensing intern for the Emergencies Division in the Geneva office. The intern will be supervised by the satellite imagery analyst. Projects and tasks may include, but are not limited to:
- Ordering, preprocessing, and loading satellite imagery into server;
- Evaluating quality and potential relevancy of geospatial datasets;
- Performing basic imagery and vector processing;
- Downloading, processing, and geotagging of photographs and video files;
- Testing and evaluating new software packages;
- Testingand evaluatingnew GPS and related geospatial apps for possible field use;and
- Conducting basic academic literature and media reviews on relevant topics
The internship will start in April or May 2013. The duration of the internship is flexible and will be discussed during the interview. Ideally, the candidate will be available to intern three to five days a week – timing can be flexible.
Internships are unpaid. Interns may be reimbursed for their lunch and local travel costs as pre-approved by HRW and in accordance with HRW policy. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the Human Rights Watch staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Qualifications: A valid Swiss work permit is required. Good working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS 10.x and solid oral communications skills in English are required. The successful applicant will be a disciplined self-starter and a strong team player. S/he should have a demonstrated interest in human rights and practical knowledge of GIS and remote sensing.
