Consultant Surgeon (with General Medical Officer duties)
St Helena, South Atlantic
2 year FTC commencing preferably September 2013 – a later date could be negotiated
£70k-£100k pa taxable in St Helena
A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,000, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK, poised for transformation with the imminent construction of an airport.
Key responsibilities:
  • Responsible for overall management of the surgical services on island, including weekly theatre list and the provision of pre- and post-operative care with 24-hour cover for surgical emergencies. There are about 320 major surgical cases per year and around 250 minor surgeries.
  • Working in a team with other medical officers, provide general medical care to all island residents and visitors. This will include:
    • Running general practice clinics in the capital and at other locations
    • Caring for hospital in-patients
    • Being a member of the on-call rota for emergency out-of-hours care.
  • Contribute to achievements of the St Helena Health Directorate Strategic plan which has a strong focus on health promotion and preventative care programmes as well as staff development. The postholder is expected to actively engage in training of nursing staff and students and in weekly CPD sessions with the medical team.
You must hold MB; ChB or BM; BS; BAO; BCH; FRCS or equivalent qualification or experience. Full GMC registration or eligibility and good standing with that body will be required, with substantial postgraduate experience in general surgery including orthopaedics and laparoscopic operations.
