Communications Manager, Health Policy in Atlanta, GA

Position Description:
 
The Social Marketing and Communication Department (SMC) has distinctive competence in a science-based approach to social marketing and communication to advance public health in the U.S.  SMC currently implements a diverse portfolio of social marketing, public relations and communication projects in the U.S. which are funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, private associations, and foundations on health issues such as obesity prevention, immunization, tobacco control, and injury prevention.
 
As part of FHI360’s Social Marketing and Communication Department, the Communications Manager, Health Policy will be the lead, on-site manager for a 3 – 4 member communications team.  This position will be based on-site at the client’s office. S/he will direct task orders from the Department of Community Health (DCH) Office of Policy and Partnership (OPP) senior staff, and will work closely with FHI360 staff in Washington, DC to ensure that all client needs are met. Said person will also work on other SMC projects as needed.  Those activities will include but not be limited to the following:
 
  • Manage DCH’s strategic communications needs, presentation and speechwriting needs, material development, partner-outreach support, and media-relations outreach support in collaboration with the FHI360 staff and the Deputy Director for the Community Transformation Grant (CTG) Campaign;
  • Lead team in the research of topics for development of PowerPoint presentations, talking points, speeches, briefing books and other materials for the DCH Director as well as other senior CDC leaders on the topic of community health, as well as initiatives developed by CDC as part of its prevention campaigns and the Community Transformation Grants and other DCH programs;
  • Develop and implement communications and public relations strategies to promote and publicize a variety of departmental projects, services and programs;
  • Oversee all response to media inquiries, both in and outside of routine office hours;
  • Provide consultative review and editing to internal customer’s communications to ensure accuracy and clarity of message and tone;
  • Apply understanding of business/organizational operations to improve material’s depth and relevance to target audience
  • Ensure quality control for the work of the FHI360 on-site team and ensure program objectives are met;
  • Lead meetings for specific unit deliverables, including planning and budget assistance;
  • Work closely with departments to keep abreast of company developments and trends;
  • Work on problems that are moderately complex in scope and require judgment in resolving or making recommendations for solutions;
  • Develop and maintain close relations with DCH and Office of Policy and Partnership (OPP) staff.
 
Minimum Requirements: 
 
  • Bachelor’s Degree or its international equivalent in Public Policy, Political Science, Marketing, Mass Communication, Public Relations and/or Journalism; Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Requires 10+ years of relevant experience and/or an equivalent combination of both education and experience.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience working on public policy, health communication and social marketing program for federal health clients. Direct experience working for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention a plus;
  • Minimum 6 years of experience working on public relations or communication programs
  • Knowledge of public policy and direct work experience working on health policy topics;
  • Knowledge of and experience in public relations as it relates to public policy;
  • Knowledge of communication strategies, tactics, tools for framing issues;
  • Understanding of graphic design and print elements;
  • Experience in how to approach and market to diverse audiences with culturally suitable materials and other media products;
  • Knowledge of both traditional and new media;
  • Public-relations agency experience a plus;
  • Ability to manage large, complicated and demanding projects under tight deadlines;
  • Demonstrated skills in writing, editing and effective dissemination of information to wide audiences;
  • Strong client relations skills that lead to high client satisfactions;
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, pay attention to details and handle a variety of responsibilities efficiently and effectively;
  • Ability to apply research to program development;
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to think and write clearly, creatively and persuasively.
