Whatever your role at MI5, you’ll be contributing to protecting the UK from threats to national security including terrorism, espionage, sabotage and the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
We currently need a self-motivated and enthusiastic technician for our vehicle workshop to ensure that our vehicles are maintained to a high standard of road worthiness. You will carry out vehicle services and checks, maintain vehicles to MOT standard, repair defects reported by users and prepare new vehicles for use. You will also help to design new capabilities as part of a dual skilled engineering team and be part of the duty team responsible for recovery of all Security Service vehicles.
You will need to hold City & Guilds Level 2 plus NVQ Level 2 or an equivalent qualification in Motor Vehicle Mechanics and to have completed a full Motor Vehicle Technician apprenticeship. In addition, you will need experience of working as a vehicle technician within a main dealership. Ideally you will also have experience in vehicle roadside recovery.
Working within a busy, customer-led section you will need a positive and proactive approach. You will need to organise and prioritise your time effectively to meet deadlines and remain calm and flexible during periods of high volumes of work. A team player, you will be comfortable communicating with a diverse range of people including colleagues, external contractors and suppliers.
You will need a full clean driving licence. A full HGV driving licence would also be of benefit. Basic IT skills will be required, including the ability to use email, the internet, MS Word and Excel, although training will be offered on our fleet data system. We also offer a range of specialist development opportunities.
We work from a well-equipped building in West London. We take pride in our workspace so you should be able to work tidily, use equipment with care and adhere to health and safety procedures. Benefits include a gym and other on-site recreational facilities.
Recruitment process
The first thing we will ask you to do is complete our pre-screening questions to find out if you meet our initial criteria. If you do meet these criteria we will then ask you to begin an application. You will need to create a login and provide your full name, email address and a memorable password. Once you have successfully created a personal account, you will be instructed to complete an online application form, answering some questions about your skills and experience in relation to the role. Our recruitment team will complete an application sift and successful applicants will be invited to a telephone interview to check they have the potential skills and motivation to work for the Security Service.
Assuming you pass this stage, you will be asked to attend a face-to-face interview involving both technical questions and questions regarding your wider skills and experience in relation to the role requirements. If successful, this will be followed by a security interview with a vetting officer, a medical and a final selection interview.
Guaranteed Interview Scheme
As part of our commitment to the “Positive About Disabled People” scheme we offer an interview to all candidates with a disability who meet our minimum criteria for the job vacancy that they are applying for. This is known as the Guaranteed Interview Scheme (GIS).
Along with the standard eligibility requirements for this post, your application will be assessed on how far you meet the job specification based on the answers you provide on the application form. Your application must score the minimum amount of points set. On successful completion of this stage, you will be invited to interview. This will normally be a telephone interview and is our guaranteed interview.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible to apply, you must meet our residency criteria. You must be a British citizen (either born here, or naturalised) and one of your parents must be a British citizen or have substantial ties to the UK. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for nine out of the last 10 years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. We will still consider you if you have, for example, served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty’s Government, studied abroad, or lived overseas with your parents.
Due to vetting requirements, you need to be 18 years old or above to apply. Your application may take around six months to process.
The Security Service is committed to reflecting both equal opportunities and the society we protect.
Confidentiality
Owing to the sensitivity of our work, we do not publicly disclose the identities of our staff. Discretion is vital. You should not discuss your application with anyone other than your partner or a close family member.
