Assistant Group Leader


Homes for the Homeless, Inc. and the Saratoga Family Inn offer family shelter services and a continuum of educational services for children on site, from infant development to adolescent dropout prevention. The core of our child programming is made up of preschool programs, accelerated after school education, and constructive recreational programming.
The after school programs at Saratoga Family Inn, located in Jamaica, Queens, provide a safe and friendly environment for resident and community children where they can be enriched in a variety of academic and extracurricular activities.
We are seeking enthusiastic, dedicated and creative Assistant Group Leaders for our after school program. This is an excellent position for a college student or professional interested in working with K-12 aged students outside of the traditional classroom setting.
Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Assist students with homework and other school projects
  • Lead activities with groups of students and assist program coordinator and head teacher in the planning of enrichment activities and trips
  • Work with program staff to update bulletin boards in the classroom and main hallway
  • Maintain a clean, bright and active classroom environment
  • Attend trips as needed
  • Assist in book fairs, holiday parties and activities, plays, etc.
  • Assist in other areas as needed 
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma required, some coursework toward a Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field is preferred
  • Minimum two years of experience working with children ages 5 to 18
  • Must pass a background investigation which includes employment history and criminal background check
  • Kind, creative, flexible and caring personality that works well with children and as part of the after school program staff team
Work hours are three hour shifts, Monday through Friday, in the afternoons (generally from 3pm to 6pm) during the school year (15-20 hours/week) and flexible during the summer. Must be available to work on occasional Saturdays. Candidates will be expected to pass a 6th grade standardized test and teach a provided sample lesson as part of the interview process. This is a part time position paying $12 per hour.
