Program Instructor (Queens)


Homes for the Homeless, Inc. and the Saratoga Family Inn offer family shelter services and a continuum of educational services for children on site, from infant development to adolescent dropout prevention. The core of our child programming is made up of preschool programs, accelerated after school education, and constructive recreational programming.
The after school programs at Saratoga Family Inn, located in the Jamaica, NY, provides a safe and friendly environment for resident and community children where they can be enriched in a variety of academic and extracurricular activities.
Job Description We are seeking an experienced, dedicated and creative instructor for our after school program. This is a full time position, salary in the mid $30's, depending on experience, with good benefits. This is an excellent position for a professional interested in working with adolescents and pre-teens outside of the traditional classroom setting.
The Program Instructor will work full time with students from ages 5 to 12. This includes educating and supporting students in the after school program, creating a constructivist and active learning environment based on the individual needs of the students, recruiting students for the program, and developing and maintaining communication with schools and parents.
Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:
Program Operations:
-Write monthly lesson plans and calendar of events -Assist students with homework and other school projects -Update bulletin boards in the classroom and main hallway -Maintain a clean, bright and active classroom environment -Assist in the coordination of trips and activities -Attend trips as needed -Provide "lesson of the day," art, recreation and computer time -Weekly recruitment of new school-aged children
Advocacy and Support: -Communicate with parents and other site staff as needed -Develop and maintain relationships with parents, school administrators and school personnel -Monthly visits to schools to meet with teachers, administrators, and/or school counselors regarding students' academic and social progress -Assist parents with school matters, i.e. attending parent-teacher conferences when requested
Administration:
-Maintain student files -Assist with educational supply order
Other: -Assist in book fairs, holiday parties and activities, plays, etc. -Assist in other areas as needed
Work hours are 10:30am – 6:30pm
Qualifications:
¸ Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field ¸ At least one year of experience working with children in a school or after school setting ¸ Excellent oral and written communication skills ¸ Excellent organizational and planning skills ¸ Must pass a background investigation which includes employment history and criminal background check
