Department of Physics
Associate Professor in Theoretical Physics, Complex Materials and Geological Systems
A position as Associate Professor in theoretical physics in the fields of Complex Systems and Physics of Geological Systems is available at the Department of Physics, under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo.
Job description
The Department of Physics at the University of Oslo invites applicants for an Associate professorship in theoretical physics in the Advanced Materials and Complex Systems/Physics of Geological Processes (AMCS/PGP) collaboration at the University of Oslo. Preference will be given to applicants experienced with the application of physics to Earth sciences. The successful candidate is expected to enhance the quality of the AMCS/PGP group and actively contribute to its research and teaching. AMCS/PGP attempts to bridge the gap between physics and geology. Geological processes such as deformation, transport and growth-dissolution processes can be studied using methods recently developed in physics to bridge the gap between field oriented studies and experiments, computer modeling and theory.
Current research themes include
The successful candidate should have a broad theoretical and computational physics background and be able to apply a variety of theoretical methods to problems of interest to AMCS/PGP and to substantially enhance the level of theoretical work at AMCS/PGP. It is important that the successful candidate is able to collaborate with the current scientific staff in the AMCS/PGP group, on research projects and on joint long-term grant applications. It is also important that the candidate will strengthen our collaboration with other groups, external or internal to the Department.
Qualifications
To qualify for appointment as Associate professor, which is considered to be a junior permanent position at the Department, the applicant must have documented scientific work equivalent to a doctorate, and several years of post-doctoral experience.
Besides taking an active part in the research activities at the Department, the successful applicant is expected to supervise PhD and master students. Teaching duties will include graduate as well as undergraduate courses in physics/computational physics. The teaching languages at the University of Oslo are Norwegian and English. The person appointed to the position must be able to teach in Norwegian and English within two years.
The position will also involve administrative duties according to current regulations by the Department or Faculty.
Assessing the applicants, the main emphasis will be placed on the documented scientific competence including the relevant submitted scientific works. Account will also be taken of research management and participation in research projects if adequate evidence of such activity is documented. Collaborative and social skills, as well as documented ability to attract external research funding will be emphasized. Furthermore, weight will be ascribed to documented pedagogical qualifications through education and experience, outreach activities, the ability to create a good working environment, and expected future scientific potential.
Applicants, who at the time of appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of formal basic teaching competence, must acquire such competence in the course of a period of two years.
Evaluation
As a general rule an interview and a trial lecture will be used in the appointment process. References will also be contacted. Reference is otherwise made to rules regarding the procedures for appointment of persons to positions as professors and associate professors at the University of Oslo, and Rules for the assessment and weighting of pedagogical competence for appointments to permanent academic posts which include teaching duties.
Pay grade: 57 – 71 (468 400 - 609 500 NOK) depending on qualifications)
The application must include all relevant information on education, former positions, research and teaching activities as well as administrative experience. In particular the following information is mandatory:
In accordance with the University of Oslo`s equal opportunities policy, we invite applications from all interested individuals regardless of gender or ethnicity. The Department of Physics has as a stated goal to increase the number of female scientific staff and specifically urges female candidates to apply for the position.
The University of Oslo has a contract for all employees regarding acquisition and transfer of intellectual property rights.
