Applications are invited for positions in the new Department of Industrial Design at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Successful applicants will have, or expect shortly to receive, a PhD, or have teaching experience in higher education of five years or more. Candidates for the position of Associate Professor should also be able to demonstrate an appropriate record of research and publication.
Preference may be given to candidates who can contribute expertise in the broad discipline of new product development. Elements of this might include: product design specifications, conceptualization (including industrial design studio education), design for manufacture and assembly, computer-aided design, product modelling and visualization techniques, entrepreneurship and professional industrial design practice in the Chinese context. Nevertheless, given the multidisciplinary nature of modern practice, applications are invited in all areas of industrial and product design, education and research.
Growth in China will re-define patterns of consumption, production, and cultural appreciation domestically and globally for generations to come. In this setting, XJTLU's Industrial Design programme sets out to educate a new generation of industrial and product designers able to understand and participate in China's ongoing social, cultural and economic transformation, equipped with solid competencies with regards to creative design, industrial production and technology, artistic expression, interdisciplinary collaboration and social and environmental responsibility.
Design taught on this programme focuses on, but is not limited to, electronic appliances and devices, tools and instruments of various kinds, household goods, furniture, lighting, vehicles and transportation systems, toys, sports goods, interactive systems and user interfaces, accessories, safety equipment, medical devices and prostheses, packaging and related service systems. The programme's educational emphases rest on the principles of new product development including aesthetic sensitivity, human-oriented responsibility, technological and engineering competence, user research as well as on social, cultural and economic awareness, with a view to enabling people and communities to live desirable futures. Location at the heart of Suzhou Industrial Park will be a key asset to the new Department of Industrial Design.
The salary range for the positions is 22,932 - 28,098 RMB/month (Lecturer), and 28,523 - 38,939 RMB/month (Associate Professor). In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses. Overseas staff may receive a tax "holiday" of up to three years, depending on nationality and personal circumstances.
