Professor Positions Department of Biological Sciences

Department of Biological Sciences

Applications are invited for positions in the Department of Biological Sciences at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. The Department specialises in the molecular biosciences and currently has 14 academic staff and over 150 students.
Successful applicants will have, or expect shortly to receive, a PhD, or be able to demonstrate appropriate professional experience. Applicants should have good teaching experience and evidence of the ability to produce high quality research publications. Candidates for the position of Associate Professor should also have a strong track record in teaching and academic supervision, as well as an international research profile in their fields and a successful record of research funding. Candidates with teaching and research interests in bioinformatics and structural biology are particularly encouraged to apply. Experience in developing and managing Masters programmes would also be well regarded.
The Department of Biological Sciences focuses on molecular bioscience and has recruited faculty from globally distinguished institutions working in this discipline. Although relatively new, the Department is already establishing a solid reputation, as indicated by the growing number of grant awards to its staff (e.g. from the '863' National High Tech Development Programme, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Wenli Wang Charity Foundation) and national and international research collaborations (e.g. with Novartis and Unilever plc). It has state-of-the-art instrumentation housed in custom-built labs, and with excellent technical support. Staff also benefit from the fact that Suzhou is a biomedical 'hot-spot' - Cold Spring Harbor Asia (http://www.csh-asia.org/index.html) is located within walking distance and there is a major concentration of biotechnology companies in BioBay (http://en.biobay.com.cn/main/index.asp). Current research areas include: cell signalling; chemical biology; microbiology; virology; metabolic disease; neuroscience; and proteomics. The Department currently offers an undergraduate degree programme in biological science and, commencing in September 2013, will also offer an M.Res. degree programme in Molecular Bioscience.
XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), well-connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei, and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP ($160 billion in 2011). The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town's canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there are a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and a great nightlife. Suzhou is also home to four international schools.
The salary range for the positions is 22,932 - 28,098 RMB/month (Lecturer), and 28,523 - 38,939 RMB/month (Associate Professor). In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses. Overseas staff may receive a tax "holiday" of up to three years, depending on nationality and personal circumstances.
To apply: please click on the Apply button below to submit an online application (you will be asked to upload your CV and covering letter (in English) outlining your interest in the position, and complete an Applicant Information form and Equal Opportunities Form).
Applications should be received by 25th January 2013 (please quote reference BIO1210). Informal enquiries may be addressed to the Head of Department, Professor David O'Connor (Email: David.OConnor@xjtlu.edu.cn).
