Retail Action Project Organizer


The Retail Action Project (RAP) is seeking an Organizer to build the power of retail workers to improve standards in the retail industry. Specifically the organizer would recruit, engage and move retail workers to action to address workplace issues in their jobs and in changing public policy. The organizer would work specifically on our Sustainable Scheduling campaign to win predictable, livable hours for retail workers. The organizer would also identify and organize workers who've experienced wage theft and discrimination in scheduling to take legal action. In addition, this organizer may be responsible for engaging allied organizations and individuals to support the Scheduling campaign.
RAP is an innovative membership organization of retail workers dedicated to improving standards and opportunities for workers in the retail industry. RAP aims to develop the leadership and power of retail workers to improve the quality of jobs and challenge injustices in the industry. We work to raise standards in retail through organizing, policy and legal action, while serving the immediate needs of our membership through portable services and benefits.
Description of Duties:
Worker Organizing: Recruit, engage and move retail workers to action to address workplace issues in their jobs and in changing public policy through the Sustainable Scheduling Campaign.
Campaign Development: Initiate, develop and lead workers to advance strategic store campaigns within targeted stores to address wage theft and discrimination in scheduling or address key workplace issues defined by workers. The organizer will be responsible for tracking labor violations experienced by workers, moving workers to take collective legal action and coordinating with lawyers assigned to the case.
Coalition Support: Engage allied organizations and individuals to support the Scheduling campaign through online action and participation in events and meetings.

Coordination: Work with staff, members and allies to develop and implement to advance the campaign. Coordinate with the Campaign Organizer, Executive Director and Communications Director to meet campaign goals, organize actions and events, and respond to media requests.
Membership Development: Develop the skills of members to take leadership in strategic planning, activate the membership base, and communicating with the public to advance campaigns, including conducting interviews with media reporters.
Data Management: Manage large, detailed membership lists to enhance strategic organizing, including the analysis of worker networks and developing worker activists.
Online Organizing: Recruit and engage retail workers using targeted outreach on social media and the development of creative media.
Campaign Communications: Develop persuasive written content for print and online communications to advance campaigns and engage members.
Qualifications:
• Minimum of 2 years experience organizing low-wage workers
• Demonstrated commitment to social, economic and racial justice
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment, manage and prioritize multiple tasks and work with attention to detail
• Ability to critically assess effectiveness of strategies and make adjustments as needed
• Demonstrated ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of people
• Strong writing, communication & listening skills
• Willingness to work long, irregular, evening or weekends as needed.
• Experience with online organizing strategies desired.
• Work experience or knowledge of the retail or fashion industry preferred.
