Based in Strasbourg, France, the Council of Europe brings together the resources of 47 member countries to advance democratic principles based on the European Convention on Human Rights. Reporting directly to the Secretary General, you will lead and manage our Directorate of Legal Advice and International Public Law to ensure efficient management and achieve our strategic objectives.
In particular, you will provide legal information and counsel at the highest level. You will plan and implement intergovernmental initiatives and advise on the drafting of conventions and international agreements. Your advice and decisions will have an impact on the application of law across the continent. You will represent the Council of Europe at major events.
Alongside an excellent law degree, you should bring an impressive record in legal advice and/or public international law, with particular expertise in the law of international organisations. At the same time, you will be experienced in managing a substantial legal service, familiar with thinking conceptually and capable of resolving complex legal questions, and you will bring a highly developed vision of the international political, economic, social and cultural climate. You should be passionate about continuous improvement and focused on results. Finally, you should be fluent in either English or French, and have working knowledge of the other language.
