The International Debate Education Association IDEA works to strengthen democracy, active citizenship and mutual understanding through debate education among young people. To achieve that, IDEA has developed three program lines: Debate in the Neighbourhood; Debate in the Classroom and Debate at University. We are looking for a new project officer ‘Debate at University’ to coordinate our university program.
The project officer ‘Debate at University’ will coordinate the project ‘Debate changing Europe’ in which university debating societies from five EU countries (Spain, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands and Sweden) organise debate tournaments and public debates that stimulate university students to reflect about the future of Europe and the role of young people within it. The most active and best debaters participate in an international training event in Maastricht. They will learn to advocate their points of view and lobby with European Union policy makers.
The project officer coordinates the development of the training manual for the final event, which will be further developed into a manual that the final event the participants use to give trainings to university or high school students in their home towns. In addition, the project officer is responsible for content development for the website, including news items and articles on European issues. The project officer evaluates the project with the participating partners and will look for further opportunities to cooperate in the future. Finally, he/she will guarantee proper reporting to donors, and will support further fundraising for the continuation of this program line.
We are looking for someone who:
- is a good project manager and has proven skills in financial and narrative reporting
- is able to coordinate a network of university debate clubs effectively and adequately
- has good research-, writing and editing skills in the areas of EU, citizenship, and/or minorities
- has strong communication skills and is able to promote the project via social media channels.
- has great interest in planning, monitoring and evaluation
- has knowledge about debating and applied debate (preferably in the area of lobby)
- is creative, active and enthusiastic about encouraging young people to debate
- is able to coordinate and guide the work of volunteers and interns
