Research Fellow University of Hull

The successful applicant is expected to conduct research on historical records relating to the ethnicity of Africans entering the Atlantic slave trade between 1500 and 1850, particularly those arriving in Brazil in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The successful candidate will work closely under the supervision of Professor David Richardson, the principal investigator at Hull of EUROTAST, with a view to develop a profile of the ethnicity of enslaved Africans reaching Brazil as preparation for a larger study of the same. The period of the appointment is for three months in the first instance. It may be extended for a further period, subject to satisfactory progress during the three-month tenure of the appointment. Extension of the appointment will be linked to registration of the successful candidate for a PhD at the University.
The successful applicant will have a good (upper second or first or equivalent) first degree and/or Masters in History or related discipline; training in African history and/or Brazilian history; fluency in Portuguese and a working competency (with appropriate internationally accepted qualifications) in English; and demonstrable skills in creating databases and a willingness to undertake training in electronic packages such as GIS. Experience in working in historical archives in Brazil is essential. Salary: £31,020 to £35,938 pa plus generous travel allowances and career exploratory allowances, which are available under Marie Curie provisions.
