CAMP DIRECTOR


The Louis August Jonas Foundation seeks a full-time Camp Director for Camp Rising Sun, a full scholarship, international leadership program. When camp is not in session the Camp Director works in the NYC office. During the summer program, the Camp Director spends 8-10 weeks living on the Clinton girls' campus in Rhinebeck, NY. The Camp Director is part of a small and dedicated team of professionals who believe in developing in bright, motivated adolescents, the potential for making a difference in their communities and the world through sensitive, responsible leadership. The Camp Director works directly with the Associate Executive Director and is responsible for implementing and overseeing all aspects of the Camp Rising Sun Program.

Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Manage the camper selection process for both the boys and girls programs
Update all selection materials annually, including selectors' manual, applications, references, etc.
Create new informational materials as needed or improve existing materials as desirable, including brochure, online video, powerpoint presentation, etc.
Communicate with selectors and meet their needs
Lead the NYC team of selectors
Conduct information sessions for prospective campers and their parents as needed
Determine a process for camper application review and, in conjunction with other staff, select campers
Maintain camper files; assure that all required documents are received
Oversee the program
Establish program dates, in collaboration with other staff
In conjunction with the Associate Executive Director, review, update and modify, as needed, the Program Curriculum Document
Evaluate camp facilities and work with the Facilities Managers at Red Hook and Clinton to ensure that our facilities will support the program
Manage seasonal staff selection
Recruit seasonal staff from among alumni and other sources
Together with other staff, develop a hiring philosophy and process
Review application materials and modify as needed
Conduct interviews
Check references or develop a process for doing so
Assure that staff have all required documents and releases, including background checks, certifications and medical forms
Recommend seasonal staff to the Associate Executive Director for hiring
Manage camper admission, arrival and departure
Coordinate with selectors on camper travel and visas
Ascertain that LAJF has all necessary documents from campers, including permission forms, medical forms, etc.
In conjunction with the Director of Alumni Affairs, coordinate home stays for campers from abroad and from other parts of the U.S. at both ends of the summer
Organize the bus transportation to and from NYC and camp
Implement the program
In conjunction with the Associate Executive Director and the other Camp Director, develop and deliver staff orientation
Provide appropriate training for staff: inappropriate intimate behavior; recognizing abuse, etc.
Become familiar and assure compliance with the Health and Safety and Staff Manual(s)
Attend meetings of the Health and Safety Committee of the Board
Work with the Dutchess County Health Department
Plan and coordinate hiking and other trips
Check that projects, productions, evening programs, council talks and instructions are consistent with CRS principles
Plan and implement special days and events at camp (e.g. Family Weekend; Alumni Weekend; cultural field trip)
Supervise staff
Supervise and evaluate seasonal staff, in conjunction with the other Camp Director
Develop and implement a staff evaluation process that includes a written component
Communicate this process to all seasonal staff
Provide regular feedback during the summer
Create the schedule for staff days off
Create the schedule for trips
Coordinate instructions and, as appropriate, projects between the two camps
Maintain files and other records for all staff
Work as part of a team of staff and Board members to assure a professional, caring experience for the young people in our charge.
The Camp Director reports to the Associate Executive Director and/or the Executive Director.

Working, successfully with adolescents and enjoying the age
Hiring and supervising staff
Possessing organizational and administrative skills
Public speaking
Understanding the importance of camper and staff safety
Complying with government regulations
A history with Camp Rising Sun or other camps
Understanding and valuing diversity in all its forms and individual differences
Possessing and exhibiting energy and an outgoing nature.
Teaching, developing curriculum and/or other experience with education
