Communications Associate


Organization:

Four decades after its creation, the Guttmacher Institute continues to act as the global leader in advancing sexual and reproductive health, and rights, through an interrelated program of research, policy analysis and public education designed to generate new ideas, encourage enlightened public debate and promote sound policy and program development. The Institute's overarching goal is to ensure the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health for all people worldwide.

Position Summary:

The Communications Associate works independently and collaboratively to write web content, media materials, fact sheets, opinion articles and other communications products covering the range of the Institute's work. This position will offer critical, substantive support to senior staff and help ensure the coordination of the outreach efforts of the communications team and the Institute as a whole. The ideal candidate has a passion for sexual and reproductive health issues both in the United States and globally, and is able to synthesize and summarize in writing the Institute's research and policy analysis for communication to audiences ranging from media and policymakers to advocates and the public-at-large.

Responsibilities:

Drafts news releases for the Institute's two peer-reviewed journals, Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health and International Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health as well as its policy journal, the Guttmacher Policy Review;
Conceptualizes and writes web and social media content, fact sheets, letters to the editor and blog posts as needed;
Drafts press releases promoting new Guttmacher research and policy analysis and the Institute's position on developing issues;
Proactively identifies opportunities for and drafts News in Context features, Evidence Checks and web media kits;
Works with senior communications staff to develop and implement dissemination strategies;
Provides information and referrals in response to phone and electronic inquiries from the public;
Compiles data for and prepares periodic reports for funders and the Guttmacher Board; and
Performs other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in Social Sciences, Journalism, Public Relations or related fields;
Minimum of 3 years relevant work experience;
Excellent communications and writing skills;
Ability to understand statistical materials;
An interest in sexual and reproductive health and promoting Guttmacher's mission;
Ability to work efficiently under deadlines and juggle priorities and multiple projects
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team;
Ability to travel at least 10% of the year;
Knowledge of public health, reproductive health, social science research, and/or human rights and social justice issues preferred;
Some project management experience preferred; and
Cross-cultural/language skills preferred.
