The Position
Aga Khan Education Service, India (AKES, I): is a part of the global AKES network which has over 250 schools across Asia and Africa. AKES,I manages 8 schools in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, one residential Hostel in Hyderabad, 19 Pre-Primary Centres and nine Support Centres under its Rural Education Advancement Programme (REAP) in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

This senior management position for ECD and Primary provides an opportunity to develop and lead initiatives for schools, educators and young children, aged 0-8 years, across the AKES organization in India. As a member of the leadership team at AKES,I the ECD Head will provide expertise for defining policies, repositioning of programmes and facilitating professional development for teachers through its Network Schools and stand-alone Day Care Centres. The main responsibility is to ensure that all children enrolled in the AKES, I schools are offered appropriate educational opportunities across all areas of the 0-3, pre-primary and primary programmes.

Specific duties will include:
  • Identify and provide strategic planning for the specific and diverse professional development needs of ECD and Early Primary teachers in AKES, I schools and ECD centres.

  • Develop and maintain effective systems of planning, assessment, record keeping and reporting, to include regular updates to the SWD regarding key indicators and ECD portfolio; in collaboration with the system and framework established by Head 's Monitoring and Evaluation at AKES,I.

  • Plan, implement, monitor and evaluate AKES, I ECD & Primary programmes, including curriculum and instructional and activities in standalone units and preprimary sections attached to the schools.

  • Promote and ensure the development of effective teaching and learning through coaching/mentoring and modelling effective Early Years practice.

  • Develop and support regular self-evaluation and internal school review, as well as facilitate external evaluations in order to develop dynamic school improvement plans.

  • Develop and implement a screening system and comprehensive guidelines for staff to use in monitoring and reviewing progress against health and educational developmental indicators for all children aged 0-8 years.

  • Meet with School Leaders and ECD Centre Coordinator regularly to discuss new policies and any concerns that have been raised by staff, parents or the wider community.

  • Support the appointment of ECD staff, as appropriate, to ensure the appointees have the potential to achieve the agreed aims and objectives of AKES, I.

  • Conduct feasibility studies and propose detailed action plans to commence new ECD centres and upgrade existing centres as per AKES,I's Long Term Strategy.

  • Support the unit heads in purchase and deploying resources for its effective use including monitoring effective use and replacements.

  • Set standards and ensure health and safety standards for all aspects related to delivery of ECD and Primary years programme such as premises, play area, equipment, teaching and learning materials.

  • Monitor and report on AKDN ECD collaborative grant projects, activities and outcomes.

  • Periodically conduct quality assurance audits to identify gaps in effective delivery of programmes and propose interventions in the rolling budgets of AKES,I annually.

  • Attend meetings and professional development sessions with other regional AKDN ECD Programme Officers and the SWD ECD Senior Manager.

  • Leverage partnerships/alliances for curriculum and recruitment practices.

  • Drive AKESI ECD brand building and marketing initiatives.

  • The Requirements

    The successful candidate for this position will possess:
    Desirable Qualification and Experience (preferably reputed schools with international / experimental teaching practices):
  • Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education and B.ED from a reputed institute ' full time ) .

  • At least 5+ years experience in curriculum development (Pre-primary and Primary) .

  • At least 5+ year teaching experience in pre-primary and primary level.

  • At least 10 years experience in independently managing pre-primary and primary programmes.

  • Any other international exposure in the field of education.

  • At least 5+ years experience in development of pre-primary and primary teacher training modules (Curriculum and soft skills) .

  • Competency in Computer Skills.

  • Exceptional interpersonal, networking and communication skills. .

  • Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English.

  • Willingness to travel, as needed, to schools across the network.


  • Minimum Qualification and Experience:
  • Graduate (in any discipline) and BED and ECCE from a reputed institute (full time one year) .

  • Minimum 2 years experience in curriculum development (pre-primary and primary) .

  • 3- 5 years teaching experience in Pre-primary and Primary level (ICSE/CBSE schools) .

  • At least 5 years experience in in dependently managing pre-primary and primary programmes.

  • At least 2-3 years experience in development of pre-primary and primary teacher training modules (Curriculum and Soft skills) .

  • Exceptional interpersonal, networking and communication skills.

  • Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English.

  • Willingness to travel, as needed, to schools across the network.
