Operational Risk Management Consultant

About the Job: 
FINCA International is looking for an Operational Risk Management (ORM) Consultant. S/he will play a crucial role in implementing a large-scale initiative to strengthen FINCA’s operational risk management systems. The consultant will work under the direction of FINCA’s global risk manager, global risk management analyst, and in collaboration with permanent staff and other external consultants.
Tasks and Responsibilities: 
  • Identify and assess the monetary and other impacts of historical operational risk events through the development and distribution of a questionnaire, analysis of internal documents, and interviews with key personnel across FINCA’s global network;
  • Develop reports and presentations for senior management documenting the causes, effects, and consequences of, as well as FINCA’s responses to, historical operational risk events and subsequent “lessons learned;”
  • Assist FINCA staff in the mapping of subsidiary workflows to identify areas of vulnerability and to draft corrective action plans;
  • Perform scenario analyses, assessing the likelihood and impact of risk events in an effort to identify appropriate risk treatment actions and to estimate economic capital. Make comments related to the risk assessment and recommendations and/or action plans for risk mitigation;
  • Assist FINCA staff in selecting and populating a database to capture future operational risk events;
  • Develop materials for three FINCA regional workshops and audit and board sessions that summarize findings of operational risk assessments and next steps in terms of policy and process improvements;
  • Travel to and participate in execution of three regional workshops as well as selected audit and board sessions.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree mandatory, Master's degree in Finance, Business, or Engineering and/or professional risk certification preferred;
  • Substantial experience in operational risk management, preferably in a financial sector environment, and understanding of industry best practice (e.g. Basel II, COSO);
  • Broad knowledge of microfinance products and operations;
  • Strong ability to identify risks and mitigating controls;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop recommendations with supporting information;
  • Strong project management skills;
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) required, fluency/proficiency in Russian, French, and/or Spanish desired;
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 40% of the time.
