Post-Doctoral Research Associate Alfaisal University

Alfaisal University - College of Engineering

One post, fixed term - Ref: Modelling-12
  • Materials Characterizations, Tribological Modelling, Finite Element Analysis
  • Salary: $45,000 per annum (inclusive of allowances)
  • Duration: 1 year with potential for another year extension based on funding
Applications are invited to join a research program on the wear behavior characterization of Stellite alloys using computational modeling. This program is funded by Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia. The post holder will be expected to work closely with other academics and researchers involved in materials characterization and tribological modelling.
Most of the commercially available finite element software do not facilitate wear modelling and as a result design optimization of tribological phenomenon (e.g. sliding wear) is not always achieved. This proposal addresses this deficiency in tribological modelling and aims to develop sophisticated software tools which will be incorporated on the platform of existing commercially available software. The model will be verified using historical data on wear of most commonly used alloys in off-shore industrial sector with a potential to extend its capabilities to a wide range of other engineering materials.
The applicant will work towards specific responsibility related to materials characterization and sliding wear modelling using finite element package. Computer programming skills and experience in ANSYS or ABAQUS finite element analysis package is necessary along with APDL and/or Phython script writing.
As such the role is a pivotal one, bridging both materials characterization and tribological modelling. You must demonstrate effective planning, networking and communication skills. The post is available immediately. Some additional work can include supervision of UG projects and to provide limited teaching support as deemed appropriate by the College of Engineering. The position requires complying with relevant College policies, including Financial Regulations, Health and Safety Policy, Information Systems Security Policy and Intellectual Property Rights and Register of Interests Policies.
The position is suitable for candidates with a PhD (or equivalent) in Mechanical/Materials/Tribology Engineering, or a closely related discipline (e.g. Computational Mechanics). The successful candidate must be motivated, independent and hard-working with a strong research/technical background in areas relevant to this project. Peer reviewed publications in the field would be preferred. In addition to the duties outlined above, the appointed candidates will be required to present results and reports at progress meetings, prepare papers for publication and contribute towards project planning.
Our preferred method of application is a detailed CV, a covering letter, a research and teaching statement and scientific publications list with the contact details of two referees. Please send your application to Dr. Mattheus (Theo) F. A. Goosen, Office of Research & Graduate Studies, Alfaisal University, Takhassusi Street, P.O. Box 50927, Riyadh, 11533, Saudi Arabia, E-mail: MGoosen@alfaisal.edu via the Apply button below.
Please copy your application and contact for any informal enquiries about the post to Dr. Muhammad A Ashraf, E-mail: aashraf@alfaisal.edu
Closing date: 30th December 2012
