DFID Entry Scheme for Advisers (DESA)

Would you like to help DFID rise to the challenge of reducing world poverty and do all that we can to achieve the Millennium Development Goals?
DFID is pleased to announce a new DFID Entry Scheme for Advisers (DESA). This is a great opportunity to join DFID and launch a career in development as an adviser.
The purpose of this new scheme is to grow technical advisory talent in-house.  If successful, DESA will provide you with a valuable development opportunity and quality work experience designed to develop your technical and adviser skills across a broad range of areas. At the end of a three year placement DESA will have a pipeline of people with the right mix of operational experience and policy competence to function effectively as A2L/A2 advisers.
The 2013 Scheme will open for applications on 17 December.
Places are available in the following cadres in 2013:
Climate and Environment, Education, Evaluation, Governance, Humanitarian, Infrastructure, Livelihoods, Private Sector Development  and Social Development.
The scheme is looking for people with:
  • Talent, commitment and a passion for development; a willingness and ability to work in countries where DFID posts prove consistently difficult to fill.
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification (Master’s Degree, PhD) or equivalent.
  • Relevant work experience, preferably though not always essentially, in development. 2 to 3 years of work experience is expected.
Successful DESA candidates will be engaged on three year Fixed Term Development Contracts. The first year would be spent on a placement in the UK and subsequent two years in a placement overseas.
DFID is an equal opportunities employer and selection is on merit. To be eligible for the scheme you must be one of the following;
  • a UK national
  • a national of a member state of the European Economic Area (EEA)
  • a Swiss national
  • a Commonwealth citizen with an indefinite right to remain in the UK without employment restrictions
We welcome applications from anyone meeting the eligibility requirements of the DESA scheme.  Please go to: www.civilservice.gov.uk/jobs to see full details, download an application pack and submit your application.
Closing date for applications: 12 Midnight UK time on 25 January 2013
