Horizon Oil Sands
Horizon Oil Sands is an exciting part of our growth. Full production capacity for Phase 1 is 110,000 bbl/d of fully upgraded, light, sweet synthetic crude oil. We will see incremental production gains throughout the completion of future expansion and debottlenecking, with targeted full facility capacity of approximately 250,000 bbl/d. Further phases of expansion will bring the ultimate capacity to 500,000 bbl/d.

This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta and is eligible for:
• Relocation to Calgary or Fort McMurray
• Company Sponsored Fly In/Fly Out and Camp Accommodation Program with charter flights available from Calgary or Edmonton

THE OPPORTUNITY:
Our Horizon Oil Sands operation is expanding with project spending forecasted at approximately $2 - 2.5 billion each year for the next several years.

The Lead Technology Development will lead the development of the Long Range Technology Development Plan, translate it into annual budgets and ensure that the team is composed of members with unique expertise and skills and has the required resources to the deliver our plan.

• Lead a diverse group of industry experts on the development of innovative processes that positively impact operations and departments throughout Horizon Oil Sands and Canadian Natural
• Create cohesive team structure and interface with internal and external members of the oil sands innovation sector.
• Initiate and oversee ground-breaking research projects from project inception through to implementation
• Represent Canadian Natural at research and development technical forms such as Canada's Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) and University Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Chair programs

HOW WILL YOU MAKE YOUR MARK?
• Demonstrate that safety and environmental stewardship are part of your core values
• Ensure that the Technology Development Process Engineering team provides exceptional technical support to Horizon Operation
• Develop and steward technical and business practices that support innovation across Canadian Natural
• Coordinate and develop the Long Range Technology Development Plan
• Prepare and steward the departmental budget for the team that will deliver the Long Range Plan
• Promote a culture of proactive accountability to the operation of your team
• Ensure team commitment with regards to the Project Management practices of the department
• Support the team of engineers in the planning and execution of their projects to ensure that the operational benefits of their projects are realized
• Oversee the evaluation of new technologies and patents that support the department's Long Range Plans
• Oversee the team as they provide technical support in the development of software tools for monitoring, analyzing and optimizing processes
• Present Technology Development projects and strategies to senior management

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Typically 15+ of related industry experience with an engineering degree is required, with a preference to Mineral Processing, Metallurgical or Chemical
• 5+ years of leadership experience in oil sands operating, mineral processing, or mining
• Advanced degrees and Project Management Professional (PMP) designations are an asset
• Registration or eligibility for registration with APEGA
• Proven success in developing research projects from conceptual design into implementation based on solid scientific research and engineering principles
• Familiarity with and understanding of:
- Oil Sands Mining
- Project management, design, construction and commissioning
- Project planning and scheduling
- Leading diverse teams of experts in problem solving exercises
