ROLE OUTLINE:
We are looking for a Senior Ecologist to be based in our Southampton office; this is a key position within the National Ecology team and we are seeking a strong individual who can help the established team develop the ecological business in the region.  The key elements of the role include the application of ecological principles to a range of projects, an in-depth knowledge of wildlife law, and the ability to identify pragmatic solutions to ecological constraints.  In addition, the role will require effective communication with a variety of stakeholders (including other WYG disciplines), targeted business development and financial awareness.  In return, we offer a very competitive salary and benefits package together with the opportunity to develop your career in a leading international multidisciplinary consultancy.

Sitting within an established team in Southampton, the successful applicant will also work closely with our wider ecology team, including ecologists in Truro, Bristol, Cardiff and Wellington.  They will require a proven track record in project management, field work and technical reporting with a desire to mentor other staff and improve knowledge of their chosen field across the national team. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES       
  • Reporting to and supporting the Principal Ecologist in Southampton.
  • Generation, maintenance and delivery of workloads in and around Southampton.
  • Project management including client liaison, tender preparation and financial control, ensuring effective delivery of projects to a high standard.
  • Supervision of other project team members, including subcontractors and seasonal staff.
  • Business development, expansion of client base and resource management in the local area.
  • Supporting and contributing to national team objectives.
  • Proactively managing the flow of information, correspondence and queries.
  • Proactively interpreting and taking appropriate actions / decisions.
  • Operation at a professional level within the ecological sector.
  • Ensuring departmental processes are adhered to, owning problems and identifying solutions

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Permanent or FTC for 6 months.
  • Would consider part time.
  • Support to Head of Ecology on large bids for national and international opportunities and frameworks.  Requires client focus, commercial savvy and pragmatic view point.
  • Production of fee proposals for local projects.
  • Input to financial, business development and Health & Safety reporting and providing additional support to the Senior Management Team as required.
  • Mentoring of less senior staff.
  • Providing professional advice and support across the business
  • Knowledge and experience of protected species mitigation (including licensing)
  • Ornithology and/or invertebrate expertise highly desirable
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and its application
  • Relevant professional qualification
  • Management of projects within time, cost and quality constraints and standards 
  • Quality and technical review of reports.
  • Site work, and reporting, including production of EcIA chapters
