Public Relations & Special Events Internship


Established in 1994, the Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC) is a private, non-profit environmental education organization dedicated to providing year-round, interactive programming which, "...teaches the student to see the land, to understand what he sees, and enjoy what he understands," in the spirit of conservationist Aldo Leopold.

Driven by its mission, ALNC operates two innovative campuses in Dane County, in Monona and Black Earth. ALNC uses both campuses as outdoor classrooms to provide more than 40,000 Wisconsin children, families and teachers each year with opportunities to learn about the natural world and develop a lifelong interest in outdoor activities. Primary programs are school field trips, after-school programs for economically disadvantaged youth, family programming, scout programs, home school programs, adult lectures, special events and teacher training workshops.

One Public Relations & Special Events Internship is available in the Development & Communications Department for the Spring of 2013. The internship will run mid-January to early-May, with the potential to stay through the summer. Hours are 10 hours a week during working hours. Hours, start date and end date are negotiable.

Opportunities & Responsibilities Include:

o Spring Events - serve as onsite liason to assist with volunteer and event coordination before, during and after events as needed
o Banff Film Festival - assist with recruiting and coordinating volunteer ushers, bike valets and other volunteers for the Banff Film Festival presented by REI at the Barrymore Theater
o Social Media, Newsletter & E-newsletter - assist with writing and posting content
o Event and Promotional Materials - assist with event invitations, program flyers, on-site event signage, displays, hand-outs, etc.
o Canoecopia, Isthmus Green Day & Community Festival Outreach - assist at promotional tables at expos, conferences and community festivals
o Public Relations - draft press releases, article pitches and PSAs

Requirements:

• Excellent oral and written communications skills
• Interest in event planning, sustainability and environmental education
• Computer skills - Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & Powerpoint)
• A cheerful and positive attitude and strong organizational skills
• Commitment, flexibility, and reliability
• Preferred but not required:
• Graphic Design experience
• Working knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Publisher
• Event experience and knowledge of best practices in event production
• Experience writing for publications

Manager of Marketing & Audience Development
Hours: 10 hours/week during working hours preferred but negotiable

Responsibilities: Assist the Advancement Department with various development and public relations responsibilities
Transportation: Vehicle needed, the nearest bus stop is about 3/4 mile from ALNC
