Department

Asian Network News produces the twice-daily news programme Asian Network Reports and the daily Nihal phone-in, as well as all the news and entertainment bulletins on the station. The department delivers news and discussion targeted at the Asian Network audience of under 35s and reflects the lives and concerns of young Britons from Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan backgrounds. It's a highly creative workplace where we use production and writing styles which appeal to a family-orientated audience and take a multi-media approach to interaction and the delivery of information. The Asian Network news operation has built a strong reputation for delivering diverse and original journalism around the rest of the BBC and beyond.

Role

This is an exciting year for the Asian Network as its news operation comes together on the 8th floor of New Broadcasting House in London. It will see the team working across everything from the daily news programme to presentation to the award-winning Nihal show. We’re looking for a highly motivated Broadcast Assistant whose primary role will be on the phone-in but will develop into a future journalist who can work across all the output. You’ll have to master the technology to run the phone-in and will need to write news stories, scripts, briefings and other material in a style which appeals to a family audience of British Asians.

Requirements

You'll need to know what makes the average Asian Network listener tick and have a grasp of what is and what isn't a story for the station. You'll be expected to come up with distinctive and original ideas around issues that affect British Asians, especially for the phone-in. You’ll need to be a quick learner who can start developing further journalistic skills.

For more details about the role, contact the Head of News Kevin Silverton on 07739 300207 or Assistant Editor George Mann on 07921 648832.
